The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the the Mooncake Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivalsin China. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Mid-Autumn Festival has a history of over 3,000 years. It was derived from the custom of worshiping the moon in autumn to appreciate it for the harvest. In the process of cultural and historical developments, the festival has been infused with more meanings, including families gathering together and praying for good health and happiness。

Speaking of the customs, worshiping the moon is a very old custom of Mid-Autumn Festivalin China. People worship the moonfor blessing, and for recalling memories. The full moon is the symbol of family reunions in Chinese culture. Chinese people usually set a table outside their houses and sit together to appreciate the full moon while enjoying dinner with family。

The best place to enjoy the moon in Daming Lake is the Moonlit Pavilion. This pavilion was built in 1936, and on any moonlit night, whether it’s a full moon or a crescent moon, the Moonlit Pavilion seems to be draped in a gossamer of silver-white. The white stone bridges and columns around it also gleam in the gentle moonlight, appearing pristine. Even the reflections in the lake, be it the bridge, the moon, or the pavilion, shimmer like jade, casting clear and tangible images on the water’s surface in the radiant moonlight。

Mooncakes are the most representative food for Mid-Autumn Festival. Their round shape and sweet flavor symbolize completeness and sweetness. At the Mid-Autumn Festival, people eat mooncakes together with family, or present mooncakes to relatives or friends, to express their love and best wishes。

The Lord Rabbit is a traditional handicraft in Beijing, and also a type of toy associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival. Its image is derived from the Jade Rabbit in the Moon Palace, with the head of a rabbit and the body of a human, wearing armor, holding a protective flag, sitting or standing, pounding a pestle or riding a beast, and standing with two big ears. Initially, it originated from ancient moon worship, but gradually evolved into a festive doll, combining sacred and secular qualities, serving both sacrificial and recreational purposes。

In Jinan, this type of doll is called the “Rabbit King,”which is a colorful clay sculpture of a rabbit with a charming and adorable appearance. In the old days of Jinan, every Mid-Autumn Festival, alongside mooncakes, the highly seasonal clay sculpture Rabbit King would appear on the streets and alleys, bringing back childhood memories for countless Jinan locals。
